We try to be generous with our treasures, but like a child who wants the bigger half, we struggle between keeping for ourselves and giving more. Meanwhile, on this day, we gave thanks first for a man who is an ever-trustworthy husband, father, and grandfather.Mother’s Day has become a day when the family heads to a local recreational lake, Lake Pleasant, to spend the day on a rented pontoon. Due to the pandemic, we held off, deciding to fulfill the tradition and avoid crowds on the Monday following Father’s Day.
As the pontoon sped across the lake, we relished the breeze while searching for a quiet cove. The hot air made the water more inviting, an invitation I resisted due to a not-quite-healed knee replacement incision. As ED and the boys played in the water, explored the cove, and jumped from rocks, Mike tooled around keeping the pontoon in a stable position (the anchor is not really functional), and I lay back on the sofa sipping wine and reading. Pretty much what I do at home except outdoors.
ED had put together some delectable treats. Luna the dog enjoyed jumping onto our laps. And we adults, anyway, marveled at how privileged we are, distinguishing between being blessed with the basics of life, and privileged with anything beyond. Had we worked and saved for this? Yes, but I know many people who work and do not reach this level of comfort. And one does need to look far to find stories of people whose advantages exceed far beyond any human need.
We try to be generous with our treasures, but like a child who wants the bigger half, we struggle between keeping for ourselves and giving more. Meanwhile, on this day, we gave thanks first for a man who is an ever-trustworthy husband, father, and grandfather. A man who spent “his” day struggling with a boat so that he could watch his family enjoy an afternoon out. We are privileged. Thanks, Mike!

I need to figure out how to do that
What a wonderful day and memories for the boys!
A great tribute to Mike too.
I too feel very privileged in life. And I know others have worked just as hard and are not where I am today. I’m grateful!
This is beautiful tribute to a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and just an all-around great guy.
